President’s Report – July 2018

It has been a busy start to 2018 for NAIOP Southern Nevada and it’s hard to believe we are nearly half way through the year! Your Board of Directors is hard at work to ensure that all our members benefit from the NAIOP experience, through awesome programming, great events, and active government affairs and advocacy.

We had a packed house for our June Breakfast program “Transportation in the City”. We heard from industry experts about the need our city has for a robust transit system. Las Vegas has waited long enough and it is time for our industry to rally our community to make this happen.

And what a great success we had for 26th annual golf tournament! Over 250 players filled the 27-hole course at Spanish Trail for a great, fun-filled day.

For the first time ever, NAIOP sponsored an event held at this year’s ICSC Retail Conference on May 22. NAIOP took over the Brooklyn Bowl on the Strip and held a breakfast panel discussion, Q&A, and network event centered on the future of retail in the United States. It was a great event to complement NAIOP’s focus on all aspects of the commercial real estate market.

NAIOP Southern Nevada has teamed up with the LIED Institute for Real Estate Studies to award $5,000 to the 2018 NAIOP Scholarship. The NAIOP/LIED Scholarship Committee has selected five worthy students to each receive $1,000 to be applied to their fall tuition. These students will be recognized at a NAIOP breakfast meeting this fall.

Our Community Service Committee has put together an amazing initiative to renovate four houses located at St. Jude’s Ranch for Children in Boulder City. In keeping with our mission to assist organizations in need of supplies and services, this project will create healthier living spaces for guests at St. Jude’s Ranch while fostering relationships between NAIOP members. This is a great way for our members to give back to our great community. In addition to monetary and supplies donations, much of the physical labor will be completed by our own NAIOP members as weekend volunteers. This is a great opportunity for everyone to be involved. We have a busy event schedule coming up this summer & fall. Don’t miss our Annual Bowling Tournament to be held on July 11th at the Gold Coast – our teams are sold out! Our July 19th breakfast meeting will showcase a robust panel of experts on the strength of the multi-family sector, followed by a Mayor’s Panel in August. On August 10th, our Education Committee will hold the next Members Only workshop entitled: “Unique & Emerging Trends”- watch for details! Make sure to save-the-date for our social event of the year, the annual Oktoberfest Members & Guest Mixer at the Hofbrauhaus on October 3rd.

Another important focus of our chapter and industry is mentoring and encouraging the next generation of leaders. Our Developing Leader program (DLI) continues to be an incredible experience to expose our industry to tomorrow’s leaders. This year’s class is an exceptional one, and we are expecting great things from this group.  Graduation is in September.

Our government affairs efforts are paying big dividends for our membership. NAIOP successfully supported a Clark County Resolution at the June 19th Commission meeting to continue the effort to expand BLM lands in Clark County for future development. We are also involved in an effort to streamline the permitting process in Clark County as well as providing input to recent changes in the Clark County Water Reclamation fee process. Our Government Affairs Committee will continue to monitor and advocate on these and other City/County initiatives that are important to our members. We are also keeping close tabs on the upcoming election and we are working on a NAIOP-friendly guide to help our members vote more intelligently this coming November.

With a membership now over 500 (510 and growing!) there will be lots to keep our members busy throughout the summer months. I hope to see many of you at the events.

Finally, I want to thank our members, our Board of Directors and many volunteers and our corporate sponsors for their contributions to the successful start to 2018.

Have a safe and enjoyable summer!
